For the Love of Opium
Hooked From The First Page
Writing this as someone who has not personally experienced the pull, and gnawing pain, of addiction, I absolutely enjoyed every aspect of this title. It is obvious that Simmons is a skilled wordsmith who successfully builds vivid imagery in the reader, and pulls them deeper into the topic of opium, its history, and medicinal properties. In a way, his thorough research and relatable language has ignited a curiosity in me that I have not experienced for many years. (And as an avid reader, that is no small feat!) While I am not an addict, I have been touched by addiction throughout my life. I have seen the successful fall. The fallen fade into a shadow of themselves. The shadows who turn to memories. Simmons has helped me to understand the process of addiction, and how just a “taste” can lead someone down that path. I would also like to comment on the beautiful images throughout the text, submitted by S. Solachick and A. Gardner. The detail in each photo is appreciated, and the vibrant colors complement the text well. The drawings are exceptional, and successfully represent the corresponding passages. "For The Love of Opium" offers insight that I never thought I needed, and created a desire for more.
Very well written and researched book
This book is full of research that is presented in a factual and witty way. It is a great read and I believe its content can really can end the opiod epidemic. If you are an addict or squeaky clean it is still what you need to know ! It’s a must read for everyone.
Enthralling
I never knew that Frankenstein and the Vampyre were inspired in the same place at the same time under the influence of Opium. This book is well written with facts that I’ve never seen anywhere else. I only wish it was longer.
